Hello there, I'm JG Narwhal, a paramedic from Louisville, Kentucky.
The best way to help any casualty is to dial 911, but you may need to help before the paramedics arrive.
Remember DRABC.
D - Danger. Before treating a patient ensure there's no danger to you.
R - Response. Does the patient respond to their name, or a tap on the shoulder?
A - Airway. Is the airway open? Tilt their head upwards if not.
B - Breathing. Is the patient breathing? If not, you will have to perform CPR.
And finally C, Circulation. Is the patient bleeding?
If so, clean the wound with disinfectant, and cover with a bandage.
Splinters or shrapnel can be removed with tweezers, unless deep in the skin.
Bruising is a sign of internal bleeding, and should be treated at a hospital if serious.
If external bleeding is severe, apply pressure to the wound.
If you've dialed 911, an ambulance should soon arrive to help you.
